Common Early Signs of Dementia
It’s normal to forget a name or misplace keys from time to time, but sometimes these lapses can be more than just everyday forgetfulness. Early signs of dementia often show up as changes in memory, thinking, or behaviour that are noticeable and persistent. Being aware of these signs can help you or your loved ones get support sooner, plan ahead and take steps to maintain quality of life. Here are some common things to watch for.
Memory Problems
Forgetting recent events or conversations.
Repeatedly asking the same questions.
Misplacing items in unusual places (e.g., putting keys in the fridge).
Difficulty With Familiar Tasks
Struggling to follow a recipe, pay bills, or use common household items.
Language Difficulties
Trouble finding the right words.
Stopping mid-sentence or repeating phrases.
Disorientation
Getting lost in familiar places.
Confusing times, dates, or seasons.
Poor Judgement
Making unusual financial decisions.
Neglecting personal hygiene or safety.
Changes in Mood or Personality
Becoming easily irritable, anxious, suspicious, or depressed.
Withdrawal
Avoiding social activities or hobbies once enjoyed.
Difficulty With Planning & Problem-Solving
Struggling to follow the steps in a plan or handle numbers.
Important Note: These symptoms may appear gradually and can sometimes be mistaken for normal ageing. Having one or two of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean dementia. Stress, lack of sleep, medications, or other health problems can cause similar symptoms.
